The
Growing Tree
Of
the five universal shapes, the spiral is the one I see most often, even
in trees. The spiral represents growth and change -- much like the yearly
cycle of certain trees. As I think of the tree's year, I am reminded of
change inside the bigger picture of constancy. The tree's buds and gregarious
green leaves in spring speak of newness, rebirth and hope. The tree grows
lush and full in summer, creating a rich canopy of green that shades and
cools us from the sun and replenishes the oxygen we need to survive. Autumn
is the show-off time of rich deep colors that soon fall from the limbs.
Winter is a barren time, a stark nakedness with its own beauty. Yet we
know the cycle begins again and again... the cycle of renewal... all while
growth and change continue. This is life -- for the tree and for us as
well.
